At Designtales, we are more than just an interior design studio—we are a collective of women who believe in the power of storytelling through design. Founded in 2016, our practice is deeply rooted in quiet luxury, intentional living, and human-centric design. As an all-women team, we take pride in celebrating the trailblazing women who have redefined the boundaries of design across disciplines. From architecture to fashion, these visionaries have not only shaped our aesthetic landscape but also paved the way for future generations of designers.
Eileen Gray – The Modernist Visionary
A true pioneer of modernism, Eileen Gray was an Irish architect and furniture designer whose work challenged conventional forms. She seamlessly blended artistry and function, particularly in her iconic E-1027 house, a masterpiece of early modernist architecture. Gray’s lacquered furniture and innovative spatial designs were groundbreaking in a field dominated by men.
“To create, one must first question everything.” — Eileen Gray
Despite her contributions, Gray’s work was overshadowed for decades. Today, she is recognized as a critical figure in modern design, influencing minimalist and functionalist movements that define contemporary interiors.
Zaha Hadid – The Queen of the Curv
A force of nature in the world of architecture, Zaha Hadid shattered glass ceilings with her daring, futuristic designs. As the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Hadid’s work defied geometric norms, embracing sweeping curves and organic forms. Her projects, such as the Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan, transformed our understanding of architectural fluidity.
“There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” — Zaha Hadid
Hadid’s legacy is not just in the structures she designed but in her relentless pursuit of pushing architectural boundaries, inspiring countless women to enter the field.
Ray Eames – The Master of Modernism
While Charles Eames is often the more recognized name, Ray Eames was equally responsible for shaping mid-century modern design. A painter, designer, and filmmaker, she infused the Eames brand with a sense of playfulness and vibrancy. Together, the Eames duo created iconic pieces like the Eames Lounge Chair, which remains one of the most celebrated furniture designs in history.
“What works is better than what looks good. The looks good can change, but what works, works.” — Ray Eames
Beyond furniture, Ray contributed significantly to graphic design, textile patterns, and exhibition design, proving that creativity knows no boundaries.
Coco Chanel – The Architect of Fashion
A revolutionary in the world of fashion, Coco Chanel redefined women’s style by introducing elegance through simplicity. She freed women from corsets, championed functional yet sophisticated clothing, and made the little black dress (LBD) a timeless icon. Her designs blurred the lines between menswear and womenswear, emphasizing comfort without compromising chicness.
“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” — Coco Chanel
Chanel’s influence extends beyond fashion—her modernist approach to design, branding, and luxury continues to shape how we perceive elegance today.
Brinda Somaya – The Preserver of Indian Heritage
An architect, conservationist, and urban planner, Brinda Somaya has played a pivotal role in preserving India’s built heritage while integrating contemporary design. Her work is a delicate balance of tradition and modernity, with projects like the restoration of the Tata Consultancy Services campus in Mumbai and the Rajabai Clock Tower standing as testaments to her dedication.
“The architect has to work within the social and economic context of her country. She has to take that into account while making sure she builds for people and not just for show.” — Brinda Somaya
Through her firm, Somaya and Kalappa Consultants (SNK), she has been a strong advocate for sustainable and socially responsible architecture. Her work has inspired a new generation of Indian designers to create with purpose and sensitivity.
These five women transformed the world of design through their resilience, vision, and groundbreaking ideas. At Designtales, we carry their legacy forward by designing with intention, storytelling, and an unwavering commitment to creativity. As we celebrate their achievements, we also recognize the countless women who continue to shape the industry today.
Let’s design a future where creativity knows no gender—only boundless possibilities.
